César Estrada Chávez, best known as the founder of the United Farm Workers of America, (UFW), was born in Yuma, Arizona, on March 31, 1927. He died April 23, 1993, apparently in his sleep, at a relative's home in San Luis, California. David Martinez, the UFW Secretary Treasurer, found César, fully clothed but without shoes, lying on a bed, a catalogue of American Indian art in front of him. Martinez suddenly, knew he wasn't going to wake his comrade anymore.
César was the son of a migrant farm worker. He knew the life of the migrant, attending at least 30 elementary schools. His father had been a member of farm labor unions and César at one time was a member of the National Farm Labor Union. He moved to San Jose, California, in the 1940's and married Helen Favila. They had eight children. At the time of his death he also had 27 grandchildren.
His eldest son, Fernando stated that a 36 day fast in 1988 weakened his father. The fast was to protest the use of pesticides on California table grapes. This fast caused César to lose 19% of his body weight and he ended up with kidney damage. This was just one example of his life where he sacrificed himself to improve the plight of the farm worker.
In the history of Chicano leaders no one tried harder than César Chávez to get things done for the oppressed. From 1952 to 1962 he worked with the Community Service Organization, in Oxnard where he started voter registration and citizenship drives. He also learned grass roots strategies and became General Director in 1958. Although the CSO no longer exists, last year Oxnard elected its first Hispanic Mayor, first Black councilman and only the fourth Latino I councilman in the city's 90 year history.
César left CSO in 1962 and moved to Delano where he founded The National Farm Workers Association, later renamed UFW. He chose proven organizers in Dolores Huerta and Gil Padilla to help him. By 1964 the UFW was self-supporting. By 1972 the UFW had 60,000 members. Even when the Teamsters began to organize farm workers in competition with the UFW they persevered. In March 1977 the two unions agreed that the UFW would have jurisdiction over field workers and the Teamsters would organize truck drivers and cannery workers. In 1988, the UFW won $1 million in back pay for more than 300 farm workers at a Ventura mushroom farm.
César organized nationwide boycotts of grapes, wine, and lettuce attempting to bring pressure on the growers to sign a contract with the UFW. He also improved the conditions of the farm workers by getting them basic rights such as clean drinking water and bathrooms in the fields. One of César's biggest successes was the passage of the Agriculture Labor Relations Act which was the strongest law ever passed to protect farm workers.
César Chávez commanded respect from presidents, governors and became a hero to a new generation. Those who did not work with him need to remember that the gains he made in farm fields also translated to gains for all Hispanics in other arenas.
His presence remains, and atop his desk sits a short-handled hoe, the back breaking farm tool that he was instrumental in banning. In his study are pictures of those he admired, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi.
He is quoted as saying, "The truest act of courage, the strongest act of manliness is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally non-violent struggle for justice."
